Primary Special Options class
At Modbury School P-6, we are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed. Inclusive education enables all children and students to learn alongside their peers of similar age, regardless of individual learning needs or abilities.
We are fortunate to have an on-site special options class for students in years 3 to 6. Our special options class is an integral part of the school and is designed to support students with an intellectual disability who meet the eligibility criteria. All children who are enrolled in our special class have gone through the special options placement process via the Department for Education. Each child is assessed individually by a psychologist and a recommendation is made in consultation with the family and school.
This class provides highly individualised adjustments to the curriculum, ensuring that each student’s learning and participation needs are met.
Key features of our primary special options class include:
Inclusive practice: Students are supported to participate in all aspects of school life. They are provided with support and adjustments to access areas of the curriculum, including English, mathematics, Health, Technologies and the Arts. Learning is personalised and builds on each individual’s strengths and personal interests. All students have learning goals documented in their One Plan, and their standards of educational achievement are adjusted accordingly. Students in our special options class are part of our school community and participate in whole-school events such as school assemblies. They also play alongside the rest of the school at playtime. They are provided with opportunities to learn and interact with their similarly aged peers, including those from mainstream classrooms.
Specialised support: The year 3 to 6 special options class is staffed and resourced to cater for up to 12 students, allowing for individualised attention and tailored learning programs. Students are provided with opportunities to develop their academic, social and emotional skills through a range of activities, including gardening and cooking lessons, participating in off-site excursions and specialised swimming lessons.
Collaborative learning: Our school fosters a culture of respect, belonging, and collaboration, ensuring that all students can contribute to and benefit from our diverse school community.
