Specialist programs

Find out about the specialist programs our school offers.

Arts

We offer a strong program in the Arts, including music, dance, drama and media arts. The program helps develop students’ creativity, confidence, cultural knowledge and critical thinking.

Our program includes:

  • lunch time Arts club working on student’s own projects
  • school choir, with participation in the Festival Choir
  • participation in the Primary School Music Festival
  • instrumental music lessons with either the violin, trumpet or recorder
  • regular assembly dance performances and an end-of-year performance
  • in 2024 we have engaged with Wakakirri

Physical Education

Our specialist PE teacher works with classes each week with a strong emphasis on participation and collaboration.

Students from Year 5 have the opportunity to represent our school in SAPSASA (SA Primary Schools Sports Association) competitions in sports such as netball, athletics, cross country and swimming; as well as District Sports and Knockout Sporting Carnivals.

We hold a sports day each year where students in house teams participate in a program of cooperative tabloid events and sprints.

With parent support, we can offer before/after school sports competitions. Students across the school participate in either swimming or aquatics lessons each year.

We also offer lunchtime activities in our gym, varying weekly from basketball to dancing.

Languages

At Modbury School, our students from Reception to Year 6 participate in our Japanese program, where we promote that learning an additional language is rewarding and fun.

Japanese is taught using the Australian Curriculum and through various concepts or ‘big ideas” over the course of a year, including many different topics, linking prior learning and building towards further learning in Japanese language and culture, allowing the students to make intercultural connections and immersing themselves in their learning of Japanese.

Some students in Yr 5/6 classes are chosen to participate in the annual North East Hiragana with more special events to be announced.

To find out more, feel free to meet with the Japanese teacher, Lauren Fox, on Thursdays and Fridays

Learning a language:

  • helps students gain a broader cultural perspective
  • opens up career pathways
  • promotes social cohesion and cross-cultural understanding.
